Arundhati Roy on Kerala Marxism:
"Marxism was a simple substitute for Christianity. Replace God with Marx, Satan with the bourgeoisie, Heaven with a classless society, the Church with the Party, and the form and purpose of the journey remained similar. An obstacle race, with a prize at the end."
--Arundhati Roy, from 'The God of Small Things', 1997

yes. they are both theories of emancipation.
But the feeling I get from this quote is 'oh, see marxism will amount to the same thing as christianity'.
Religion places the reasoning for broad social patterns out of the hands of people. Marxism is a theory that allows for people to be empowered and make social change for an equal and just society. It seems a lot more useful than religious approaches to behaviour change.
